From Broad Cast to Podcast 100 years of Irish Radio
Broadcast to Podcast 100 Years of Irish Radio An Taoiseach, Mícheál Martin TD, and many broadcasters from RTÉ, Newstalk, Today FM and independent radio assembled for two days of presentations and discussions on the history and future of Irish radio in the context of sport, music, the Irish language, women on radio and a range of other topics. Radio broadcasting began in Ireland one hundred years ago and, since then, has evolved and grown into today’s diverse landscape of RTÉ services, Irish language services, and commercial radio stations. Throughout that time, Irish radio has provided a platform for diverse voices and debate, offering timely, independent information to support public decision making. Overview of the 100‑Year Celebration 29–30 January 2026, University College Cork (UCC)staged a landmark event marking a century of Irish radio. The two‑day conference, titled Broadcast to Podcast: 100 Years of Irish Radio, brought together academics, broadcasters, and industry leaders to examine the past, present, and future of radio in Ireland. Key Highlights and Speakers Opening remarks by Taoiseach Mícheál Martin, with representatives from Coimisiún na Meán and UCC. Keynote address by Patricia Monahan, Director of Audio at RTÉ. Panel discussions covering talk radio, music and language, women in radio, sports, and the future of broadcasting. Special presentation on the RTÉ Audio Archives by Brid Dooley. Launch of a special edition of the Irish Communications Review focused on 100 years of Irish radio. Notable participants included Matt Cooper (Today FM), Sarah McInerney (IMRO award winner), John Creedon (IMRO Music Broadcaster), Doireann Ní Bhriain, and many others from RTÉ, 96FM, and local community stations. The event gathered a diverse group of stakeholders—from national broadcasters to community radio operators—that provided a unique platform to build relationships, share best practices, and explore collaboration opportunities.
