An isolated Ojibway First Nations reservation in Northern Ontario, Canada is the setting for “Ogoki – Call of the Wild”. It was here in the 1970s and 80’s that the Mulrooney Family, from Limerick lived for seven years. Over two decades later Deirdre and her mother Mary return to the reservation and hear the Ojibway community share their shocking and moving history. Featuring Pearl Achneepineshkum (nee Wenjack), telling the tragic story of her brother, Charlie Wenjack (subsequently subject of Tragically Hip October 2016 Juno award winning album “The Secret Path”). Funded by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, first broadcast on Newstalkfm in December 2008. Deirdre is Author of two books so far (Irish Moves, an illustrated history of dance and physical theatre in Ireland, and Orientalism, Orientation, and The Nomadic Work of Pina Bausch); Contributor to several books on theatre and dance; Anthologies; RTE Sunday Miscellany broadcasts; Host of Dance Ireland Podcasts, as well as multifarious Arts journalism and writing. Deirdre produces and directs her own creative documentaries including ‘Dance Emergency’ (TG4) ‘1943 – A Dance Odyssey’ (RTE), short dance film ‘Lucia Joyce: Full Capacity’, ‘TRUE NORTH’, and many more BAI-funded, commissioned, and Indie projects with her own production company ‘Out There Productions’. On top of her original academic work, teaching, broadcasting, and original feature radio documentaries, Deirdre occasionally curates exhibitions too, for example the recent ‘Mother Tongue’ at Kilkee’s Cultúrlann Sweeney. Deirdre is an inaugural UCD Creative Fellow 2019/2020.
